The Jays took a big risk in selecting Pedro J Martinez 11th overall. The 21 year old didn't have the ratings to bolster a rotation at such a young age. The GM left some stars on the table Mike Piazza was another target for the Toronto Blue Jays. Having a good defensive and a great bat is rare in the MLB at this time. John Smoltz was left on the board as well and could very well be more dominant now than Pedro has certainly performed thus far. Pedro fits more of the future mold that the Jays emphasized in the draft. They have one of the top farms in the MLB right now. Hoping that they turn out is another issue! Toronto has shown they are aiming for the future when they started up talks with the Milwaukee Brewers. Tom Candiotti found his way out the door in return Toronto received a First Round pick and a 16 year old Jesus Chavez. Milwaukee looks like they will have a good year ahead so the first round pick will be a late pick. Candiotti also will be sticking around at a discount with a 40% salary retention named in the deal. Jesus Chavez looks like he will have plenty of power but will be a well below average hitter if he makes the bigs!
Some of Toronto's young batters are making a case for a rookie of the year candidate. Bob Hamelin has 6 home runs in the last 10 games, including a two home run game against Kansas City.
MLB ROOKIES
Aaron Sele has found wins in his last two starts and has pitched a min. of 6 innings and given up one run in each affair. He has pitched better away than at home where he has gotten blown up (11 IP, 14 HA, 9 ER).
Jason Bere of Texas has a sparkling 3.26 ERA and an even better 2.85 FIP in a very limited sample size (19.1 IP). Texas will need him to be a staple this year because after him there isn't much depth.
Chris Gomez is batting .371 in 62 abs. He is absolutely loving Philadelphia and has anchored the bottom of the lineup. He will be one to keep an eye on because Philly will be waiting a while for another SS to develop to slot into a starting role.
